The second half of the book covers background (going all the way back to the Neolithic!), growth cycles of plants, preparing the ground, the greenhouse and the shadehouse, compost, potting soils (extensive!), planting seeds (also extensive!), making cuttings, and caring for plants. There are 2 addendums. Addendum 1 covers production, processing, and curing of medicinal herb seed. Addendum 2 covers harvest and processing of medicinal herbs. The book is detailed and informative yet engaging and entertaining.

I have had good success with growing medicinals from seed. After reading this book it has completely catapulted me into the upper echelons of seed starting. Before reading the book I was using an all organic commercial seed starting mix which brought on good results. All my plants that I started from seed (Horizon Herbs) are now thriving in my garden. Since I like to experiment and change different variables, I decided to follow Richo's advice on making homemade potting soil. I will say my seedlings look a lot healthier and robust, and feel more lively than with the other mixes. The chapter on "Making Your Own Potting Soil" is worth the price of the book alone. Many of the topics covered in that section cannot be found online. Some topics I found interesting were direct seeding, sonic effects, the tortuga, and rubber fingers. Many of these topics were invented or discovered at Horizon Herbs. This book is filled with basic, soild, and some common sense information. But when reading through it the information resonates at a deeper level, as if mother nature and Richo were both in front of you showing you. The book is great from start to finish, from the first word to the last. His stories to tie in the lessons of the chapters are stories that are deeply abosorbed and extremely helpful when growing medicinals. He has a great sense of humor and a helpful and informative way of explaning the herbal trade. He is truly a steward of the earth. I wish Amazon had more than 5 stars for a truly phenomenal book such as this one. It was highly acclaimed by many herbalists such as Christopher Hobbs. I cannot say enough great things about it. It has changed my perspective on seed starting and many other topics. Amazon is out of the book but it can also be bought directly from Richo at Horizon Herbs. My only question is, when will volume 2 be ready? Thank you Richo for all your hard work.

"The Medicinal Herb Grower" is like taking a guided pilgrimage through the garden, with an enlightened teacher of botanical beings at your side. It is a most insightful anthology of living and working in nature. As an avid herbalist and plant devotee, I have found this book inspiring and useful in many avenues of my work and life. The book begins with the "Tale of the Golden Dragonfly," which sets the stage for shapeshifting the reader into an adept steward of the garden. Each lesson throughout the book is accompanied by both anecdotal experiences of friends and experiments from the garden at Horizon Herbs. The chapter "Creating Plant Habitat" teaches how to grow Mandrake, a very complex plant to cultivate! Other subjects include creating live soil, composting, and building a greenhouse, shadehouse and tortuga (a raised bed designed after the turtle). It breaks down these processes into simple steps, and lays the information out in a down to earth way. After reading this book, I find myself much more in tune with the seasonal changes and the garden work that comes along with each phase. Warm thanks to Richo and all those involved for sharing the wisdom you have harvested over the years! This book is a sure treasure, an essential part of every gardener's reading collection.

I ordered this book last week directly from Horizon Herbs and it arrived on Saturday (along with a pack of medicinal herbs that I cannot wait to plant). I was immediately drawn to the author's style of writing that includes family stories and other anecdotes. I am new to medicinal herbs (culinary herbs have been in my garden for many years) and I think this is a great book to start with. I also love that I can order plants and seeds directly from the author's family farm, which I plan on doing again very soon. Richo Cech and Horizon Herbs has earned a new fan as well as a very happy customer.

This book is a treasure of practical advice and quirky experiences that leaves you with a sense of well being and peace, to much the same effect as using the herbs that it teaches you to cultivate! The author takes a natural approach to growing plants and really makes you think about what happens out there - in the wild places around the world where these plants make their home naturally. A pleasure to read for your winter dreams, and a useful companion in the garden once the snow melts.

If I had to get rid of my nearly 100 books relating to herbs and could choose only one to keep this book would be the one I would choose. I have been reading about herbs, using herbs, growing herbs for a couple of decades and this book is by far the most complete, the most definitive book I have yet to read. Even more amazing, Mr. Cech has managed to write this book filled with information on the growing of herbs, anecdotes, real life stories, and tons of information and pack all this succinctly and articulately in only 159 pages. I can hardly wait, but wait I must, for Volume 2.
